From Rio to Trier

The Rio Conference

At the United Nations' Environmental and Development Conference (UNCED) in Rio de Janeiro in 1992, representatives from 179 nations jointly draft and adopt the campaign plan Agenda 21. Literally translated, Agenda 21 means "What's on the agenda for the 21st century" and offers an integral concept for sustainable development.

SUSTAINABILITY: "Development to the extent that it can satisfy the present-day needs without jeopardising the ability of future generations to satisfy their own needs."
In December 1998, the Trier Town Council resolves to adopt the resolutions of the UNCED Conference in Rio at the municipal level and to draw up its own Local Agenda 21 for the City of Trier.

"The City of Trier acknowledges its responsibility at the local level for developing and implementing, in co-operation with the in-terested public, local clubs and societies, initiatives, the scientific world, private enterprises, trade unions, churches, political parties and any other groups in the community, the necessary strategies for a sustainable development in the 21st century within the scope of the Local Agenda 21 for Trier...."
(Publication No. 293/98 of the City of Trier municipal administration dated 23.11.1998)

This brochure explains the various aspects of the Agenda process in the Trier region.
In addition, the brochure introduces the newly formed registered association "Agenda 21 e.V." and calls upon the public to participate.

The participation of local citizens in the decision-making process is essential if sustainable development is to be achieved.
Foreign residents in the city and the region are expressly invited to become involved as well.
